Birth Photography FAQs
1. What is birth photography?
Birth photography is the art of professionally documenting the journey of childbirth, encompassing labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period (often referred to as the golden hour). This style of photography aims to authentically capture the profound emotions and pivotal moments of your birthing experience, preserving the narrative of your child’s arrival in a respectful and unobtrusive manner.
2. What does a birth photographer do?
A birth photographer is a professional who specializes in capturing the profound journey of childbirth, encompassing labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. Typically, I go on call at around 37 weeks gestation, ensuring readiness to join you during active labor. Upon your notification, I arrive promptly and document your child’s arrival in an unobtrusive manner, preserving these intimate moments for you to cherish.
3. Is a birth photographer worth it?
As a birth photographer, I wholeheartedly believe in the value of capturing these transformative moments. Many of my clients have expressed that investing in birth photography was invaluable to them. You can read their testimonials to gain insight into their experiences. Additionally, having a visual record of your birth can aid in processing the experience, whether it unfolded as planned or took unexpected turns. Often, clients discover moments in the photos that they don’t recall, helping them piece together their birth story. In my opinion, birth photography is truly worth it.
4. Why should I hire a birth photographer?
Hiring a birth photographer lets you, your partner, and your support team stay fully present during your baby’s arrival. While your partner focuses on supporting you, a professional photographer will capture those precious, fleeting moments, providing you with high-quality memories without the distraction of taking photos yourselves.
5. How does birth photography work?
Upon hiring, we will discuss your birth plan and preferences in detail. I remain on-call around your due date and arrive when you’re in active labor, documenting the process through to the immediate postpartum period. The aim is to capture your journey authentically, with minimal interference.
6. Do you offer doula or doulatog services?
Yes, I offer doulatog services upon request. As a certified doula and birth photographer, I can provide both continuous support and capture meaningful moments of your birth. However, since my primary focus will be supporting you, some moments may go undocumented. You can explore the pros and cons of hiring a doulatog here to decide what works best for your family.
7. What are doulatog services and how can they benefit my birthing experience?
A “doulatog” is a certified doula and birth photographer in one, offering both continuous support and professional photography during labor and delivery. This combined approach provides seamless care while capturing your birth journey’s most intimate moments. There are benefits and drawbacks to hiring a doulatog vs. a separate doula and birth photographer—check out this blog post to explore the pros and cons and decide what’s best for your family.
8. Will we meet before my delivery day?
Yes, we’ll schedule a prenatal meeting during your third trimester to review your birth plan, discuss any specific preferences or concerns, and get to know one another to ensure you feel comfortable and confident on the big day. If you’d like to meet more than once, I’m happy to accommodate that as well!
9. Will you use flash during the birth?
Light plays a crucial role in storytelling, helping convey the atmosphere and emotions of the moment. I prefer to use natural light whenever possible to capture the true essence of the environment. However, if additional lighting is needed, I will use flash when necessary. Rest assured, I will always respect your preferences and any guidelines set by your birth team.
10. How long do you stay after the birth?
I stay for up to two hours postpartum to capture those cherished first moments, including initial bonding, measurements, the first latch (if breastfeeding or chestfeeding), and introductions to family members.
11. How do you handle sensitive moments and privacy concerns?
I prioritize your comfort and privacy throughout the process. During our prenatal visit, we’ll discuss your boundaries and preferences to ensure that only the moments you’re comfortable with are captured. Rest assured, all images will be treated with the highest level of confidentiality.
12. What if my birth location has restrictions on photography?
It’s important to discuss your desire for a birth photographer with your birthing team ahead of time, as some locations or professionals may have specific policies or restrictions. I provide all my clients with a handout outlining my experience, certifications, contact information, and my role in the birth space, which you can share with your providers. I believe in open communication, so addressing any concerns early on ensures that we’re all on the same page.
13. What is your availability around my due date?
I’m on-call 24/7 starting at 37 weeks gestation, ready to join you as soon as labor begins. If you need me before 37 weeks, I’ll do everything I can to be there for you as well.
